Scott Langley Sensei @ Kenn Centre
Aug 31 @ 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM

The course is open. All associations attend at the same fee as the HDKI Members, which is £20.

For more details, please message me.

Scott Langley 6th Dan

Scott has been practising martial arts since the age of 5, however, he started his karate career proper in 1986 under the instruction of Howard Milson, a senior member of Kodokai and one of the very few 5th dans in the UK at the time. Scott trained hard with Howard and Kato Sensei and gained shodan in 1992. After travelling to Japan with Kato Sensei in 1993, Scott started university in Staffordshire and trained on a daily basis with him.

During this time he assisted Kato Sensei teaching around the UK and Europe. Scott also competed regularly; winning, both in kata and kumite, the National Championships five times, European Championships three times, and the 1996 JKA World Championships in Moscow. Building on this success, Scott travelled once more to Japan in 1997 and started to train full time at the JKA (Asai fraction) Hombu dojo.

Under constant pressure from the instruction of Asai, Abe, Yahara, Kagawa, Isaka, Yamaguchi etc, Scott went from strength to strength and in 1998 was asked to enter the instructor’s course. Unfortunately, an injured knee prevented this, so after considerable rehabilitation, Scott, along with Yasuhisa Inada, entered the course in 2000 and became the first instructor’s course class of the newly formed Japan Karate Shotorenmei. Two intensive years later, Scott graduated from the course and became the fifth non-Japanese person ever to do so (JKA/JKS).

Feeling it was time to move on and encouraged by the hombu dojo to develop JKS karate, Scott moved to Ireland. From 2002 until 2013 Scott was the Technical Director of the JKS GB & Ireland and the Chief Instructor of JKS Ireland’s Hombu Dojo. In that time the group grew from 4 clubs to 120 clubs, making it the biggest single style group in the British Isles. His own club also grew from the initial 8 members that showed up on the first night, to over 500 members and four full time instructors.

Scott is the bestselling author of Karate Stupid, Karate Clever & Shu-Ha-Ri. Scott also released a dvd called ‘karate principles’ (all of which are available on Amazon). He is a founder member of Hombu Dojo Karate International and Chief Technical Director of the group.

Scott’s technical ability goes beyond impressive.

I would thoroughly recommend this course.

Julian Mead Sensei Open Kobujutsu Seminar (Day 1) @ St Mark's CofE School
Sep 14 @ 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

This is the first day of a two day open course in Ryukyu Kobujutsu, taught by Julian Mead Sensei, Chief Instructor of the RKAGB. Following the success of courses in previous years, we are very pleased to welcome him back in Bath again. This time, we have rented the gymnasium at St Mark’s School, which is much closer to main access routes to Bath and in particular the M4. It offers a large training space with changing facilities.

The course will cover Bo and Sai, and will be of particular interest to students of Karate, as the two arts are closely related. A strong base in Karate is very helpful, although not essential, in progressing in Ryukyu Kobujutsu. Serious training in Kobujutsu also has the effect of improving your empy hand skills. Once the initial unfamiliarity with each weapon is overcome through training, it is just the matter of moving the body to strike, deflect and evade.

Julian Sensei is a long-term student and teacher of Yuishinkai Karate and Ryukyu Kobujutsu, and holds a 7th Dan in both martial arts. We are very fortunate to be able to host him for the second timeYou can find a biography here: http://rkagb.com/julian_mead_intro

The weekend is aimed at giving novices and beginners the chance to receive instruction from Julian Sensei, and meet some of the other instructors and students of the RKAGB. If you have attended an RKAGB event in the past, you require an up to date RKAGB licence to attend. If it is your first time you are very welcome to come along and try us out, at no obligation.

We are very much looking to reunite with see those who attended the course in October again, as well as introducing this fascinating and subtle art to some new people.
